FRUIT BODY: 0.5 - 1cm wide (per fruit body).  Each fruit body is hemispherical in shape and has a warted surface. Each bump is the opening to an ascospore-forming structure called a perithecia which is located just beneath the surface. From greyish-white through to pinkish and on to brick red this species is always found in clusters and quite readily recognised with a bit of practice. GILLS/PORES: N/A. FLESH: Tough and blackish. SPORES: Dark brown, ellipsoid-inequilateral and with germ slit. HABITAT: A saprophyte mainly on Beech but also on Alder, Oak, Lime and other broadleaved trees. SEASON: Common.  Throughout the year. EDIBILITY: Inedible.
